An influence on Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett, Sylvia Syms represented for many of her fellow singers the final word in the interpretation of songs. Although in her final years she operated among the sophisticates of the cabaret milieu, as a protégée and student of Billie Holiday her roots were in jazz. Sylvia Is! found her in the company of some of the Prestige mainstays of the 1960s singing songs that were long identified with her and others that she never revisited on record. In all of them, she displayed her celebrated phrasing and relaxation. Kenny Burrell’s guitar solos complemented the Syms style.
