Fresh from a stimulating tour of Japan, in the spring of 1982 Art Pepper and George Cables spent three days recording: just the two of them, indulging the uncanny empathy they had developed in Pepper's last quartet. Pepper's playing was individual to the degree that it cannot, in the final analysis, be compared to anyone else's. His best solos expressed intensity of emotion that reflected his life, which was full of difficulty, compulsiveness, danger, and painful beauty. Cables was his favorite pianist, a man who felt what Pepper felt and was able to translate it into playing that went beyond accompaniment into symbiosis. The pieces here, all standards except for an "I Got Rhythm" original, include "Over the Rainbow," a Pepper specialty to which he brought a passion fully explored in this version with Cables.
