Sometimes billed as "Ford," more often as "Snooks," blind singer-guitarist Fird Eaglin, Jr. was a prolific recording artist for over three decades. His early sides, however, were more in a country blues vein. At this 1961 session, he moved easily from moaning the down-home "I'm a Country Boy" to shouting the Ray Charles R&B hit "I Got a Woman." Whether drawing material from anonymous folk sources, the delta blues of Big Boy Crudup and Tommy McClennan, the city blues of St. Louis Jimmy, Tampa Red, and Washboard Sam, or more contemporary jukebox favorites, Eaglin, in the words of recordist Harry Oster, "transforms them all into something characteristically his own."
