LABEL: RIVERSIDE

GENRE: JAZZ

Jazz went to church in the late Fifties, thanks primarily to a group of composer/instrumentalists who allowed their familiarity with gospel to infuse their writing and playing. No single musician was more important in this effort than pianist Bobby Timmons, who created such sanctified hits as “Moanin’,” “This Here,” “Dat Dere,” and “So Tired” while featured in the bands of Art Blakey and Cannonball Adderley. All of these classic titles are included here, in a program drawn from Timmons’s years as a Riverside artist that also finds the pianist interpreting jazz and pop standards, taking a couple of unaccompanied turns, and even showing his versatility on organ and vibes.

with Art Blakey, Ron Carter, Jimmy Cobb, Sam Jones, Albert “Tootie” Heath, Connie Kay, Blue Mitchell
