The Mad Lads' sweet soul harmonies reflect the influence of Northern doo-wop groups more than the grittier R&B sounds of their native Memphis, which may account for the fact that Philadelphia has always been the quartet's strongest fan base. John Gary Williams (the group's primary lead), William Brown, Robert Phillips, and Julius Green began singing together at Booker T. Washington High School in Memphis and started recording in 1964 for Volt Records, the sister label of Stax. This collection brings together the cream of the Mad Lads' Volt output from 1968 through 1972, the year Williams launched a solo career at Stax. The Mad Lads reorganized in 1984 and six years later cut an album for the reactivated Volt label.
