In his first two Contemporary albums, Phineas Newborn (1931-89) had broken down a lot of the resistance from people who felt he was too technical. The Newborn Touch, using compositions from ten prominent instrumentalists, is about as perfect an album as you’re going to get. After all, when a virtuoso such as Phineas, backed by the formidable duo of Leroy Vinnegar and Frank Butler, plays songs by Benny Carter, Russ Freeman, Hampton Hawes, Art Pepper, Ornette Coleman, Carl Perkins, Frank Rosolino, Jimmy Woods, Barney Kessel, and Vinnegar, the results are downright transcendent. As you’ve noticed, there are many pieces by pianists, and the good blues stand out as Newborn delivers a display of two-handed piano that often sounds like four.
