The album title is a misnomer because there were few gaps in the very prolific recording career of Roosevelt Sykes (1906-83). The Arkansas-born blues singer and barrelhouse pianist was so in-demand that he was seldom absent from a studio during the five decades that followed his 1929 debut. Yet The Return of Roosevelt Sykes, his first of two albums for Bluesville, did serve to introduce his wonderfully rollicking music to a new generation during the so-called folk-blues era. Recorded in 1960 with an informally rocking combo, it harks back to the jump blues style he helped to pioneer in the Forties and includes renditions of two Sykes compositions, “Drivin’ Wheel” and “Night Time Is the Right Time,” that have become blues standards.
with Clarence Perry, Jr., Frank Ingalls, Floyd Ball, Armond "Jump" Jackson
