This remarkable 1964 live performance, previously available only as part of Lightnin’ Hopkins: The Complete Prestige/Bluesville Recordings boxed set, finds the late Texas singer, guitarist, poet, and raconteur “at his beguiling best,” in the words of Samuel Charters. It includes such Hopkins classics as “Mojo Hand” and “Short Haired Woman,” as well as personalized treatments of blues standards like “Baby, Please Don’t Go,” “My Babe,” “Mean Old Frisco,” and “Trouble in Mind” and a few uproarious stories. “If someone were to ask me who was Lightnin’ Hopkins, and what did he do,” Charters has stated, “I would probably tell them to start with this Swarthmore concert.”
