Joe Turner’s series of recordings for Pablo constitute a retrospective and update of the works of a shouter who set urban blues standards from his beginnings in Kansas City in the 1930s to Los Angeles in the 1980s. Through periods of commercial success and stretches of obscurity, Turner maintained spirit, vigor, and musicianship that made him a favorite of both blues and jazz audiences and a hero to the new generations of blues artists that began emerging in the early Sixties and continue to enrich American music to this day. Whether performing with Pete Johnson, Count Basie, Roy Eldridge or the foot soldiers of the blues world, Big Joe was astounding for his consistency and power. In this 1977 session, his colleagues include two major soloists, alto saxophonist Eddie “Cleanhead” Vinson and trumpeter Blue Mitchell.
