When the debut album of vibist-composer Walt Dickerson (b. 1931) appeared in 1961, it was considered a somewhat radical work. But more than three decades later, This Is Walt Dickerson! is a consistently inviting set, filled with melodic, if sometimes unusually structured, tunes by a cohesive foursome--a post-modern jazz quartet, if you will. Like Bobby Hutcherson, Dickerson took the vibes to the next step beyond Milt Jackson’s brilliant bebop. Unlike Hutcherson, however, Dickerson has not continued to record prolifically. His first album, long deleted until now, remains among his most rewarding.
