Today was recorded slightly more than a year after Art Pepper decided once and for all that he would devote the rest of his life, which he had made a monumental shambles, to exercising his incredible musical talent. He had done some stunning playing since his return to recording in 1975 after a 15-year absence. Despite the fact that the producer gave Pepper a rhythm section with which he had never before worked, Today represented a quantum leap in consistency and inventiveness. The admiration and support of Stanley Cowell, Cecil McBee, and Roy Haynes inspired him to an exalted level of performance.
