Trident
McCoy Tyner
Some all-star gatherings turn perfunctory, but not this trident of heavyweights. McCoy Tyner and Elvin Jones have been magical together since first teaming in John Coltrane's immortal quartet, and the rhythm section they formed with Ron Carter powered Tyner's 1966 classic The Real McCoy. Their 1975 reunion is among Tyner's best Milestone sessions, with the pianist doubling harpsichord and celeste (in the spirit of one of his influences, Thelonious Monk, on Brilliant Corners, OJCCD-026-2) and contributing three originals. Included among the standards is a knockout version of Coltrane's "Impressions."
