Canhoto da Paraíba (b. 1928) doesn't care much for the trappings of a career as a musician. Walking on Coals is only his third recording, and his first American release. But Francisco Soares de Araújo, the "lefty" from the state of Paraíba in the northeast of Brazil, belongs to the highest fraternity of Brazilian master guitarists, which includes João Pernambuco, Baden Powell, and Turíbio Santos. The unalloyed joy and spontaneity that characterize his music are heightened by his dazzling technique; indeed, Canhoto sometimes sounds just as though he's "walking on coals."
