Cannonball Adderley's artistry deepened and his reputation soared during his years with Miles Davis. But it had always been his plan to reestablish his own band with his brother Nat. He left Davis in the fall of 1959, and by the end of the following year had groomed his quintet with Nat, Victor Feldman, Sam Jones, and Louis Hayes into a swing machine that was as funky as it was adventuresome. Its formidable musicianship and Adderley's wry, garrulous personality made it one of the most engaging small groups of the decade. These concert recordings preserve the excitement the Adderleys and their rhythm section exuded in live performance. Azule Serape, Big "P", One for Daddy-O, The Chant, What Is This Thing Called Love, Cannonball's Theme with Victor Feldman, Sam Jones, Louis Hayes
