When There Are Grey Skies
Red Garland
Jazz fans never minded the grey skies when Red Garland was at the piano. He was one of the rare feel-good musicians of the modern era, with a luminous touch and sparkling voicings that could light up the most somber material. Garland could really settle into the blues as well, with "St. James Infirmary" and the spiritual "Nobody Knows the Trouble I've Seen" making the case here. Some truly old-fashioned material comprises this program, including a couple of numbers rarely heard in jazz outside of traditional bands; but Garland makes it all shine like brand-new.
