Through the guitar madness disseminated in the rocking and MTVing of the world, Jim Hall has remained an agent of calm, beauty, musical truth, and swing. In Where Would I Be?, Hall unveiled "Careful," one of the classic blues lines of the modern era, and "Minotaur," which demonstrated that he was well aware of new directions in jazz. "Simple Samba" and "Vera Cruz" showed his mastery of Brazilian idioms. "I Should Care" is one of his finest unaccompanied ballad performances. The ubiquitous percussionist Airto Moreira is on hand, along with bassist Malcolm Cecil and pianist Benny Aronov, both prominent on the New York scene in 1971, when this session was recorded.
