CHICK COREA

DownBeat Hall of Famer and NEA Jazz Master – as well as the third-most nominated artist in GRAMMY® Award history, with 63 nods (and 20 wins, including four Latin GRAMMY® Awards) – Chick Corea has attained living-legend status in jazz. From straight-ahead to avant-garde, bebop to fusion, children’s songs to chamber and symphonic works, Chick has touched an astonishing number of musical bases in his career. His classic albums range from Now He Sings, Now He Sobs (with Miroslav Vitous and Roy Haynes, Blue Note, 1968), Paris Concert (with Circle: Anthony Braxton, Dave Holland and Barry Altschul, ECM, 1971) and Return to Forever (with Return to Forever: Joe Farrell, Stanley Clarke, Airto Moreria and Flora Purim, ECM, 1972) toCrystal Silence (with Gary Burton, on ECM, 1973), My Spanish Heart (Polydor/Verve, 1976), Remembering Bud Powell (Stretch, 1997) and Five Peace Band Live (with John McLaughlin, Concord, 2009). He has collaborated with artists from Lionel Hampton and Herbie Hancock to banjoist Béla Fleck and pianist Stefano Bollani.

Born in 1941 in Massachusetts, Corea remains a tireless creative spirit, continually reinventing himself through his art. In addition to his trio with Christian McBride and Brian Blade, Corea has in recent years co-led the Five Peace Band with McLaughlin (his fellow Miles Davis alum), plus Kenny Garrett, Vinnie Colaiuta and McBride (and, on tour, also Blade); a duo project with vocalist Bobby McFerrin; and a new version of Return to Forever with Stanley Clarke and Lenny White plus Jean-Luc Ponty and Frank Gambale. The New Zealand Herald has characterized Corea’s path as “Jazz without compromise, invention without fear.”
