MOREABOUT EOS ORCHESTRA
The Eos Orchestra, formed by Jonathan Sheffer, became a new musical force when it presented its first concerts in 1995, The Music of Paul Bowles, a three-day festival at Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall. The Eos Orchestra, now in its fifth season under the artistic direction of Jonathan Sheffer, presents an annual subscription season at the Society for Ethical Culture Auditorium in New York. In these non-traditional concerts, Eos seeks to re-imagine the live music experience with a focus on re-discovery of important neglected works and composers, thematic programming, the introduction of visual elements on the concert stage, and collaboration with other artistic disciplines.
Eos has performed twice at the Lincoln Center Festival, in 1996 and again in 1998 in a program called Literally: Bernstein, which included the world premiere concert version of the late composer's ballet Dybbuk. In 1999, the Eos Orchestra performed at the White House for President Clinton and First Lady Hillary Clinton at the ceremony for the National Medal of Arts and Humanities Awards, and received the Japan Music Award for its educational programs. In the Fall of that same year, the Eos Orchestra was presented by the 92nd Street Y and the Guggenheim Museum, and recorded the score for the MGM/Robert DeNiro film Flawless. During 2000, for the third consecutive year, Eos was heard on National Public Radio's Performance Today in the United States, and on public radio in Europe.
Eos has published four books of essays and images on musical topics, and has previously released four CDs through BMG Classics. Eos has also appeared on the Arts & Entertainment network (A&E) in a biography of Ludwig van Beethoven and in a PBS Great Performances television special on Aaron Copland premiering on January 21st and 26th, 2001. Celluloid Copland is their debut recording for Telarc.
