ABOUT JEREMY DAVENPORT

When trumpeter Jeremy Davenport walks into a room many would never suspect that this charming twenty-five year old musician with “boy next door” looks had, in fact, an enormous talent. Nor would one guess that over the past six years he has played in every major city in the world. Jeremy possesses an absorbing gaze and a refreshing, unwavering passion for music. Simply and directly with an unassuming nature, he expresses his intention for his self titled debut album on the Telarc label. “I’d like people to identify with the story element of the song. If you listen to Louis Armstrong, he sings a song, then he sings the song through his horn. That’s what I’m trying to do.”

Named Offbeat Magazine’s Most Promising Jazz Newcomer this year, Davenport’s musical life has come a very long way in a very short time. His classical training by members of the St. Louis Symphony has led to his refined sound and impressive technique. In 1988, Jeremy became a merit scholar at the Manhattan School of Music. While in New York, he also began studying under the tutelage of Wynton Marsalis. He was awarded a scholarship to the University of New Orleans where he was one of the first to study in the newly founded jazz program under the direction of Ellis Marsalis. Jeremy was awarded second place in the International Trumpet Guild Jazz Competition in 1990. That same year Davenport performed with Ellis Marsalis at the Mt. Fuji Jazz Festival in Japan. Soon after, Jeremy played on four world tours with Harry Connick Jr.’s band.

When in New Orleans, where he presently resides, Davenport regularly appears with his own band. Jeremy’s numerous appearances as bandleader, vocalist and ensemble player have given him the grace and poise that only experience can bring. His most recent studio work includes playing on the newly recorded Sheryl Crow album. Jeremy has also performed with Wynton Marsalis, Branford Marsalis, Eric Reed, Marcus Roberts and Nicholas Payton.
