ABOUT RUDOLF WERTHEN & I FIAMMINGHI

Rudolf Werthen & I Fiamminghi

I Fiamminghi is the name the Italians gave to the Flemish musicians who brought musical life in the Renaissance to its zenith in court and chapel. The origin of the Franco-Belgian school in which the string players of I Fiamminghi received their training dates back to the end of the eighteenth century. The emotions comprised in the composition are expressed in an original way by using the playing techniques of this string school. Musical expression is I Fiamminghi's keystone. Thus, the orchestra does not only perform nineteenth century music but also music from this century with a focus on works of contemporary and Flemish composers.

I Fiamminghi was founded by the present artistic director, Rudolf Werthen. Together with France Springuel, the orchestra's cello soloist, he is the soul and source of attraction for a number of virtuosi. For more than a decade the orchestra has been giving concerts on the most important stages of the world. Their incomparable warm sonority, the perfect and, at the same time, rich sound, and especially the musical expression of the interpretation, receives critical praise.

The orchestra has toured in the United States, Canada, Japan, Germany and throughout Europe, Israel and Spain. International soloists Barbara Hendricks, Katia & Marielle Labèque, Hermann Prey, Jean-Pierre Rampal, Heinz Holliger, José Van Dam and Bruno-Leonardo Gelber regularly join I Fiamminghi.

In 1992, I Fiamminghi was appointed Cultural Ambassador of Flanders by the Flemish government because of its "quality and international reputation." The orchestra has recorded for SOF, RGIP, BMG and Koch International. In 1994, I Fiamminghi signed an exclusive contract with Telarc International, and embarked upon a series of highly praised recordings of 20th-century repertoire, including music of Pärt, Hovhaness, Kancheli, and Vasks. More recently, the ensemble recorded a disc of tango music by Astor Piazolla, which featured guest appearances by a group of Argentinian musicians, including the bandoneonist Juan José Mosalini. The most current recording is an innovative selection of arrangements of music by Orlando di Lassus and other Flemish masters.
