ABOUT TAPESTRY

Tapestry, a Boston-based ensemble of women's voices, was founded in 1995 by Director Laurie Monahan, mezzo-soprano, Cristi Catt, soprano and Daniela Tosic, alto. The ensemble made its concert debut with Steve Reich’s Tehellim at Jordon Hall in Boston in a performance deemed “a knockout” by the Boston Globe. The trademark of the ensemble is combining medieval repertory and contemporary compositions in bold, conceptual programs. Critics hail their rich distinctive voices, their “technically spot-on singing” and their emotionally charged performances. Gramophone Magazine describes a piece from their Celestial Light recording: “This is an outstanding performance such as I have rarely heard, beginning with a smooth legato of utter perfection in a low restricted range, then gradually expanding upwards with ecstasy to reach a top D with amazing control.” The Cleveland Plain Dealer describes Tapestry as “an ensemble that plants haunting vibrations, old and new, in our ears” and The San Diego Reader describes the ensemble’s Song of Songs Program as “hypnotically beautiful…a cornucopia of sensual pleasures.”

Tapestry’s concert appearances include The Metropolitan Museum, New York City; The Da Camera Series in Houston, TX; Jordan Hall, Boston, MA; Kentucky Center for The Arts, Louisville, KY; the Utrecht Early Music Festival, the Maastricht Musica Sacra Festival, the Tage Alter Musik Festival in Regensburg, Germany as well as appearances in San Francisco, CA; Eugene, OR; Boulder, CO; Tucson, AZ; Providence, RI; Nashville, TN; Seattle, WA; Milwaukee, WI; Los Angelos, CA and Washington DC.

Laurie Monahan is well known for her artistry and many recording with Ensemble Project Ars Nova (P.A.N.), a group she co-founded in 1980. She also was also a collaborator in the seminal performances and recordings of Hildegard von Bingen's music with Sequentia in the 1980's. Her extensive concert appearances include the Jerusalem Festival, the Boston and Berkeley Early Music Festivals, and the Berlin Festival. She has more than 20 recordings to her credit.

Cristi Catt has performed in concerts and theatrical productions throughout the US and Europe including the Bergen Festival in Norway, the Boston Early Music Festival and the Tanglewood Festival. She has recorded with the Telarc and Erato labels.

Daniela Tosic, a native of Belgrade Yugoslavia, has toured with the Belgrade-based early music ensemble "Renaissance" and Ensemble P.A.N. She is also featured on the Polygram soundtrack for the 1995 Academy Award nominated film Before the Rain.

Tapesty collaborates with one or more guest artists on their concert programs and CD recordings. Lynn Torgove, a wonderfully versatile singer from the Boston area joins them on the Celestial Light and Millenium programs. Takaaki Masuko, percussion and Shira Kammen, harp and vielle are part of our Song of Songs program. Takaaki has toured the world with a diverse group of music ensembles and also collaborates with various dance, theater and multimedia projects. Shira has appeared with numerous prominent early music ensembles. She and Laurie Monahan were colleagues for years in Project Ars Nova (P.A.N.) and continue to collaborate on new projects.
