More Of The Best

31 DEC 10 DAVID SHANNON

Originally released in 1986 by Fantasy, Chronicle Volume 2: 20 Great CCR Classics covers material spanning six of the seven albums produced by Creedence Clearwater Revival, Frisco's hard-working quartet, from 1969's Bayou Country to 1972's Mardi Gras, and also includes a couple rarer tracks that offer a glimpse of the band's early style. Still available as part of Concord's holiday promotion, the collection is a fitting tribute to one of the most popular bands of the '60s.

Chronicle Vol. 2 tackles the songs chronologically, kicking off with the almost sinister stomp of "Waking On The Water," a 1966 single released when the band still went by the Golliwogs. The song's jangly, psychedelic guitar solo is perfectly followed up by the b-side "Suzie Q (Part 2)," an alternate take on the hit single not available on any of the band's full-length studio albums.

From there the collection skips the band's first and self-titled album (tracks from which can be found on the Fantasy release Chronicle Volume 1: 20 Great CCR Classics) and moves to other well-known tunes make their way onto the release, such as "Good Golly Miss Molly," "The Midnight Special," and the Ellas McDaniel-penned "Before You Accuse Me," but the true gems are songs that never found the limelight enjoyed by the band's hits.

From 1969's Green River album, the plaintive "Wrote A Song For Everyone" confronts complex social issues genuinely enough to be recently covered by Mavis Staples and Jeff Tweedy of Wilco. Other songs in this vein include "It Came Out Of The Sky," from the 1969 album Willy And The Poor Boys, and "It's Just A Thought" off of 1970's Pendulum. But, let's not forget the reason we love CCR in the first place: "Don't Look Now (It Ain't You Or Me)" and "Pagan Baby" deliver the swamp stomp that has become synonymous with the band.
