SXSW: Where Amazing Happens

20 MAR 08 JOEL AMSTERDAM, VP of Publicity

Austin's annual schmoozapalooza, better known as SXSW, came to an end on Sunday but not before over 1,700 musical acts performed for over 15,000 club crawling, scene making, music loving registrants.

SXSW could easily adopt the NBA's new marketing slogan: "Where Amazing Happens." Where else on earth could you get your mind blown by five-piece western swing band featuring three champion fiddle-playing sisters under the age of 21? Or step into a Billy Bragg radio broadcast and hear six of the best songs the punk poet's long illustrious career? Or plop down in a 2 a.m. seat in the courtyard of the Hotel San Jose and listen while Lucinda Williams, Tift Merritt and friends share songs, jokes and great wine? It's the kismet of time, place, beer and BBQ and three Concord related shows fleshed it out in all its glory.

Tift Merritt's recently released record Another Country was the only thing the starlet played at her Blaze/DirecTV taping at the Convention Center Thursday night. It was all she needed. She and her top-flight band cut through the roots music clutter and delivered on her immense promise.

Next up was Christian Scott's transcendent set at Momo's on 6th street. Jazz is not something you see often at SXSW and that's precisely why Christian's set was such a revelation. A Miles-influenced prodigy, Christian's unique take on modern jazz is quickly becoming an Austin ritual. The capacity crowed was thrilled to see their hero in the flesh.

Lastly there was the one and only Sia. The Hear Music artist hit Austin with a force in support of her record some people have real problems. She solidified the pre-gig buzz with a Stubbs stopping set comprised of music from the new album and some gems from her catalog. Her talent is a pure one, which she delivers with an incredible mixture of star power and humility. Truly special.

It all happens in Austin every year -- one big musical happy accident that reminds us why we've gotten into this crazy business in the first place. I can't wait for next year.
