SECOND 2006 RELEASE OF RVG REMASTERS
INCLUDES CLASSIC PRESTIGE RECORDINGS BY MILES DAVIS, JOHN COLTRANE, JACK MCDUFF, EDDIE “LOCKJAW” DAVIS AND ETTA JONES
As part of its ongoing Rudy Van Gelder Remasters series, Prestige Records will release classic recordings from the 1950s and early 1960s that represent some essential listening for music fans and jazz collectors. Originally engineered by Van Gelder in his New Jersey studios (he relocated from Hackensack to Englewood Cliffs in 1959), these classic albums have been transferred by Rudy himself from the original analog stereo master tapes and remastered with high-resolution 24-bit digital technology. New liner notes have been included along with the original LP liner notes for each newly remastered CD. Says Van Gelder: “I remember the sessions well, I remember how the musicians wanted the sound, and I remember their reactions to the playbacks. Today, I feel strongly that I am their messenger.” An optometrist by day, Van Gelder was also an amateur ham radio operator who pursued recording as a hobby. Initially setting up a makeshift recording studio in his parents’ living room in Hackensack, he began recording local musicians. He recorded his first sessions for Blue Note Records in 1953 and the following year engineered his first sessions for Prestige. During a golden period that ran from the early ‘50s through the early ‘70s, he documented some of jazz’s most groundbreaking and enduring classics with the natural acoustics and warm, inviting sound that became a Van Gelder signature. Given his remarkable track record, it is no overstatement to call him the greatest recording engineer in jazz history.
