The concept was simple enough and it didn't take much to convince Orrin Keepnews that it was a good idea: Get the legendary jazz record producer and Riverside and Milestone label founder to produce a series of CD reissues spotlighting some of the most significant projects in his long, successful career.
Featuring timeless recordings by celebrated artists, 24-bit remastering from the original analog tapes (these jazz classics have never sounded better on CD), bonus tracks when available and insightful new liner notes by Keepnews himself, the releases in the Keepnews Collection series are absolutely essential for any jazz CD collection. There are already 15 must-have titles available in the series with many more in the works for this year.
I've often joked with Orrin that I should get a hand-held recorder and press the "record" button every time we see each other. After all, this is the man that was at the helm of so many of jazz history's most iconic recordings, including career-defining sessions by Thelonious Monk, Bill Evans, Wes Montgomery, Sonny Rollins, Cannonball Adderley, and many others. Keepnews is a living, breathing piece of jazz history. And I swear that he is never caught without a fascinating story to tell. But don't take my word for it. Now you can hear -- and see -- for yourself.
Enlisting the talents of videographer/podcast producer Bret Primack, we have begun a series of video podcasts featuring Keepnews's engaging, insightful, and often quite humorous recollections and reflections on the artists and sessions in the Keepnews Collection series. There are several episodes available now. What's more, although there is indeed great entertainment value in them, you may enjoy these podcasts for free. Quite frankly, we're convinced that after you see and hear Orrin Keepnews telling the stories behind these seminal jazz recordings, you won't be able to resist adding the Keepnews Collection CD releases to your collection.
